architect refusing to use materials we want in the house

Anonymous user 25/06/2026 - 10.35 AM

our architect is refusing to allow us to have laminate flooring in our house as he "has design control over the build" and does not like manmade materials- this seems bizarre to me given that we are paying him to help us design our house that we will live in :/ he has suggested that we go down the design and build route and that that would mean he would be unable to issue us a construction document but instead just issue drawings and specification as design intent. when i've looked online this seems less detailed than a construction document. given that is the only thing we wanted changed from his build, and from what i can see if we had opted for design and build from the start we would have paid significantly less, im a little stuck as to what our right are and what we can do - is it ok to insist on the construction document even if we dont get him to go to tender given we have paid for that route in stage 4? - is there any way we can force him to spec the laminate flooring (would pron rather avoid this) any advice or suggestions very welcome

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This does seem unusual. While an architect can strongly advise against a particular material for design, durability or sustainability reasons, it is generally the client's decision unless there are planning, regulatory or contractual constraints involved. The key issue here may not be the laminate flooring itself, but whether the architect is refusing to provide the Stage 4 deliverables that were included in your appointment. If you have paid for a full construction package, it would be reasonable to ask why a change to a single material specification prevents the delivery of those documents. I would suggest reviewing your appointment agreement carefully and asking for a written explanation of: 1. Why laminate flooring cannot be included or noted as a client-selected alternative. 2. Whether the architect intends to withhold any Stage 4 deliverables that are part of the agreed scope. 3. How the proposed design-and-build route would affect the services already paid for. You may not be able to force the architect to endorse a material they fundamentally disagree with, but it is reasonable to expect clarity on the contractual implications and the deliverables you have already paid for.
