Signs a wall may be load-bearing
✅ Runs perpendicular to floor joists
* In many houses, load-bearing walls run at 90° to the floor joists above.
✅ Located near the centre of the property
* Internal walls in the middle of a house are more likely to support floors or the roof.
✅ Continues through multiple floors
* If there’s a wall directly above or below it on another storey, it’s more likely structural.
✅ Supports beams or other walls
* If beams, joists or walls appear to terminate on it, that’s a strong indicator.
✅ Thicker than standard partition walls
* Internal stud walls are often around 100mm thick.
* Structural masonry walls are often 100–225mm+ thick.
Signs it may not be load-bearing
✅ Lightweight stud construction.
✅ Runs parallel with floor joists.
✅ No wall above or below.
✅ Sounds hollow when tapped.
