Peeling paint where hot water pipes run behind the wall
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.57 PM
There is a stripe of peeling paint in my kitchen where the radiator pipes run up the wall to upstairs, when feeling the wall it feels quite warm to the touch. I know I should have used proper kitchen paint (i used normal matt emulsion) but what can I do to stop it? I was thinking of wallpapering or would kitchen paint stop it peeling again? Also how would I prepare it for redecorating? Many thanks!

Hi, your heating pipes in the wall may result in a problem after you have decorated. If me I would take out a small amount of plaster-carefully to expose an inch of pipe to see if it has been cloaked around to protect before it was plastered over. If you see copper then remove all the strip off plaster to expose. Pipes would be better in a room corner and boxed in. If not possible I would box over as is- no plaster against pipes. That part of wall will always suffer if plastered over no matter what paint. Temp changes and pipe movement within that bit of wall will blow the paint off in time and even crack plaster etc. Wallpaper will be the same. Sorry its not a quick fix, or you could live with it and fill that small hole you made in the beginning, good luck
