Why does waste water from my washing machine empty into my sink?

The drainage pipe has a shared connection with the sink waste pipe so the pressure of the water from the washing machine forces it way up the sinks waste pipe. This may be caused by a blockage further along the exit drainage pipe or it may be a incorrect installation of the combined waste pipe.
