Walk in Bathroom floor
James 03/06/2026 - 12.58 PM
Hi I'm tiling bathroom but looking for bit of advice Never tiled on concrete floor, I'm doing a wheelchair accessible bathroom before my disease gets worse. Do I need to use concrete board on floor before tiling or can I tile over the concrete floor ( I've had people in my ear saying you can buy doesn't seem like the right way). This could possibly turn into a job 😂 I can possibly do voluntary work to see the actual process, I pick things up quick.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You generally do not need cement board over a concrete floor before tiling. Cement boards are mainly used over timber floors to provide a stable tiling surface. If the concrete is sound, clean, dry, and level, you can usually tile directly onto it after applying the appropriate primer if required by the adhesive manufacturer.
The main thing is to check for cracks, loose areas, moisture issues, and any uneven spots. If the floor isn't flat enough, a self-levelling compound may be needed before tiling.
Since it's a wheelchair-accessible bathroom, I'd pay extra attention to achieving a very flat floor and the correct falls in any wet areas to avoid water pooling.
Volunteering on a tiling job is actually a great way to learn the process. Watching someone set out the tiles, prepare the substrate, and deal with corners, cuts, and waterproofing will teach you a lot very quickly.
