Extending/Replacing newel post

My existing staircase has a newel post that has been cut at the same pitch as the stringer, pretty much right on top of the joint between the post and the stringer. There currently isn't a banister and would like to add one, so will need this post extended or replaced (but it's currently holding up the stringer so I wouldn't know how to go about replacing it). My question is, is there a way to extend this newel post while retaining enough of the strength so the structural integrity isn't compromised and the extended post is strong enough for a banister?

If the newel post is structural and supporting the stringer, I wouldn’t recommend simply extending it with a splice. For a handrail, the post needs to resist significant lateral loads. The best solution is usually to temporarily support the staircase, remove the existing post and install a full-length newel post properly fixed to the structure. If replacement isn’t practical, a purpose-made extension with concealed steel reinforcement may be possible, but it should be assessed carefully to ensure it meets structural and building regulation requirements.

Hi,
It’s possible to fit a spigot into a new post and drill a hole in existing newel post. But if it were me I’d remove the old one and fit a brand new post. Bit more construction involved as you would probably need to remove the bottom step and a couple of floor boards. Probably add another day’s labour onto the quote.
