Hi. I’m hoping someone can help me. I’m trying to put a new flat roof on our block garage and we had it levelled a few years back and lintel and door installed. However, the concrete lintel is the highest course on the back end and I’m not sure I can lay a timber wall plate on top of this as I cannot securely fix into it? Could someone with experience please advise if there is a way to fix it or whether I need another course or 2 on top and then the timber wall plates? Thanks

You can absolutely fix a timber wall plate directly to a concrete lintel, and it is a very common practice. You do not need to lay extra courses of blocks just for the sake of securing the timber, provided you have enough headroom for your roof fall.However, you must use the correct mechanical fixings, as standard wood screws or masonry nails will not hold.Option 1: Fix Directly to the Lintel (Easiest)If your current roof height is exactly where you want it, you can anchor the wall plate straight into the concrete.Heavy-Duty Concrete Screws (Multi-Monti or Thunderbolts): These are the best choice. You drill a pilot hole through the timber and into the concrete, then screw them straight in. They cut their own thread into the concrete and provide immense gripping power without splitting the lintel.Expansion Anchors (Rawlbolts): These work well but exert high internal pressure. Only use these if you are drilling into the center of a large, heavy lintel. Do not use them near the edges, or you risk cracking the concrete.The Process: Pre-drill your timber wall plate every 400mm to 600mm. Lay a strip of DPC (Damp Proof Course) underneath the timber to stop moisture from the concrete rotting the wood. Drill into the concrete, vacuum out the dust, and drive your structural screws home.Option 2: Add Extra Block Courses (If you need height)If you look at your roof slope (fall) and realize that fixing directly to the lintel makes the back of the roof too low, then adding one or two courses of dense concrete blocks is the right move.Timber on Blocks: If you build on top of the lintel, you can secure the wall plate to the new blockwork using standard galvanised restraint straps (fixed down the inside wall) or standard masonry anchors.Weight Consideration: A standard concrete lintel is designed to carry the weight of masonry above it. Adding 1–2 courses of blocks plus a lightweight timber flat roof is well within its structural capacity.Crucial Safety Warning: Pre-Stressed LintelsCheck what type of concrete lintel you have before drilling. If it is a standard pre-cast concrete lintel, drilling into it is fine. However, if it is a pre-stressed lintel (usually thinner, high-strength concrete), it contains highly tensioned steel cables inside. Never drill into a pre-stressed lintel, as hitting a cable can cause the lintel to structurally fail. If you suspect it is pre-stressed, you must use Option 2 or use heavy-duty strapping fixed to the brickwork around the lintel instead.
