Where is my alarm control box? (not a trick question!)

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.57 PM

Hello! We've just bought a house, all of the doors appear to have wireless alarm sensors on them, but I can't see any internal motion detectors. There's an alarm box on the outside of the building. I've looked everywhere for the control box (assuming it's wireless it could be anywhere) and I can't find it. Yes I've tried under the stairs, cupboards etc. Is there a way to find it? Can I trace some wiring or is there anything obvious to look for?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there. Firstly, It may not of been left in the property. Have you looked in the loft? Another place is in the top of wardrobes. Installers try and gain height so that the receiver receives signals easier. Try tampering with a detector, then listen out for the control box? Hope this helps you. Gary GPS Electrical

hiya chrish, if it's wireless it may not have one, it could just be in the box and battery back up and works by remote.

Most alarm panels even wireless ones are connected to the mains for power. Very few good alarm systems are run solely on batteries and only videofied springs to mind as one that's all batteries and there detectors are distinctive. If the system is working there is normally a keypad near the usual entry route, often the front door into a hallway (keypad in the Hall). The main panel can be located anywhere and not all of them have sounders in the alarm panel itself. If you have no code for the alarm, ask the sellers/ estate agents for the code and the location of the panel and the keypad, these people know who you are and that you have bought the house and should be able to help you without it costing anything. A quick way to check if your alarm is wireless, is to look at the door contact, if both sides are less than a single finger wide and roughly same size and shape its not wireless. Wireless systems have batteries and aerials so are much bulkier door contact housings, typical batteries used in wireless systems are CR123 and CR2 which are shorter but wider than an AA battery. Wireless door contacts therefore have a slim magnet and a larger enclosure for the reed, battery and aerial. You can use help forums and post pictures of the components you can see as this may help identify the system your using if indeed it is wireless.
