homeowner with old painted bricks. george calam

Anonymous user 28/05/2026 - 11.39 AM

i have painted bricks surrounding my windows. much of it was removed by high pressure washing but quite a bit remains. i cannot use chemical strippers because i have plants beneath the windows to protect. is there a power tool that will work. perhaps a sidecutter with a wire brush or tungston blade or a drill with a wire brush?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would avoid tungsten blades and aggressive grinding discs entirely on old painted brick. The risk of permanently scarring the brick is high. Nylon abrasive wheel/brush on a drill - Much gentler than steel wire - Removes remaining paint without chewing the brick face - Look for “stripper wheels” or non-woven abrasive wheels. Hope this helps. Best regards, Josh Trio Cleaning Group

You may consider Sand blasting. It is a bit intensive but will givevresult. More info: Sandblasting—more accurately called abrasive blasting—is a surface preparation method that uses high-pressure compressed air to propel fine particles at high speeds to clean, smooth, or etch a surface. It instantly strips away rust, paint, dirt, and corrosion from materials like metal, concrete, stone, and wood. Despite the traditional name, using actual silica sand is heavily restricted or illegal in many regions (including the UK since 1949) because it breaks down into toxic dust that causes a fatal lung disease called silicosis. Modern blasting utilizes a variety of safer alternative materials known as "media".
