Plasterboard screwed to old wall
Anonymous user 03/07/2026 - 3.51 PM
Can I screw plasterboard on top of an old wall, so they will be directly touching. I would screw into the brickwork for a solid fixing. Or do I need a void behind my sheet of plasterboard?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can overboard if its on a timber wall, but if its a brick wall as stated its best to remove the old plasterboard and dab the new boards on.

Yes, plasterboard can be fixed directly to an old wall depending on the condition and background.
If the existing wall is solid masonry/brickwork, the most common methods are either dot and dab adhesive fixing or mechanically fixing battens/metal systems where a void is required.
A void is not always necessary, however it can help if:
the wall is uneven,
there are damp concerns,
insulation/services are needed,
or the substrate is unsuitable for direct fixing.
If fixing directly to masonry, ensure the wall is sound and use appropriate masonry fixings. The best method depends on the condition of the existing wall and the finish required.

Hi,
Yes, you can fix plasterboard directly onto an old wall using dot & dab or by mechanical fixings into the brickwork, so it sits tight against the wall.
You do not need a void behind the board in most cases. In fact, bonding it tight is often better for solid masonry walls.
A void is only really needed if you are running services behind the board (electrics/plumbing) or need insulation/air gap.
Make sure the wall is sound, clean, and use the correct adhesive/fixings for a solid finish.
Kind regards,
Mohammad

For an old house, the best practise is to remove the plaster, strap the wall so there's a gap, then install the plasterboard. Dot & dab in an old house can cause condensation and pull damp through.
