Flat roof repair

Anonymous user 16/05/2026 - 3.28 PM

I've had a warm flat roof repaired with new boards and felt as the previous job 4 years ago was a botched job and I had leaks. The job now looks good with properly joined felt and finished properly at edges and into the gutter. However, we had rain last night and three quarters of the roof has water pooling on the roof (total roof approx 5m x 4m). I suspect there is no fall. Can anything be done now to rectify?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Not without taking Everything back of and fitting firing strips before covering.

You would have to strip the whole roof back of and install firing strips before installation

"It sounds like the finish of the felt is good, but the structural 'fall' (the slope) wasn't addressed when the new boards were installed. According to building standards, a flat roof should have a 1:80 finished fall to ensure water runs into the gutters. To rectify this now that the felt is down, you have two main options: 1. The 'proper' way is to lift the new felt and boards to install timber firrings (angled strips) onto the joists to create that slope. 2. Alternatively, you can use a specialized roof leveling compound to fill the low points, followed by a liquid-applied waterproof coating. I’d recommend asking your contractor why the fall wasn't checked before the felt was applied, as ponding water can significantly shorten the lifespan of new felt."

There are certainly a few options available to address the pooling water you're seeing. In the past, we have used specialized leveling products like Surface Level Pro, GreenSlope, or Roof Filler to build up low spots. However, those are typically best suited for older roofs where the structure has settled significantly over time. Since your roof was recently upgraded with a three-ply system, it is currently watertight and in excellent condition. While standing water can lead to gradual deterioration over many years, we recommend a more preventative approach for a new installation like yours: Our Recommendation: Liquid Rubber Coating Instead of heavy fillers, we suggest applying a high-quality liquid rubber membrane. This offers several benefits: • Enhanced Protection: It adds a seamless, durable layer that protects the underlying three-ply system even if water sits on it. • Pooling Mitigation: It helps smooth out minor inconsistencies in the surface to minimize the amount of water that collects. • Longevity: It acts as an extra "insurance policy" against the elements, significantly extending the life of your new roof. We want to ensure your investment stays protected. Let me know if you'd like a quote for the liquid rubber application, or if you have any other questions!

Sadly, you'd need to remove the existing covering. Firring strips are required to create a slope before reinstalling the covering, ensuring proper drainage from the roof and a level ceiling below. Hope this helps.

Unfortunatly it would need to be stripped back. Also if its sagging in the middle and it wasnt before then there would be timber needing replaced. One of those jobs you dont know the extent until its opened up.

If you had a "warm roof" installed correctly, with a VCL, you may be able to remove the felt covering and install a "cut-t-falls" insulation scheme and a new roof covering...regardless of which option you choose, it would not be cheap .

A little bit of water sitting on a flat roof after rain isn’t unusual, but if most of the roof is pooling then it does sound like there’s not enough fall on it somewhere. The felt itself can still be fitted perfectly and look great, but if the structure underneath is too flat, the water will still sit there. At this stage it can usually still be corrected. The normal fix would be adding firring strips or tapered insulation to create a proper fall, then re-boarding and re-felting the affected area. Sometimes drainage outlets or gutter levels can also be adjusted if they’re causing the issue. I’d keep an eye on how long the water sits for. If it’s still there a day or two later, I’d definitely be speaking to the roofer about it, especially on a newly repaired roof.
