Do I need permission to remove a load bearing wall ?

Hi Nick, Yes, you need permission from Building Control for any structural work to prove the structure will be safe. Follow these steps: 1. Appoint a structural engineer to confirm if it is a load-bearing, 2. Get structural calculations and drawings 3. Appoint a builder. 4. Apply for building control. Aside from the building regs approval mentioned by Mike, you might also need permission from the council if the house is listed or of architectural significance. Also if the wall is a party wall or adjoins a party wall, you'll likely need to issue a party wall notice to the neighbour.
