Unfortunately some people are getting quotes even though they accept the job being already agreed and that is when the trade ends up in minus as trade have to give their time money and everything else to make sure don't overcharge undercharge you for the job so to cover trade have to take deposit now

Yes — you should absolutely request a breakdown of costs before agreeing to that payment structure. Right now, the terms you’ve been given are quite vague, and that can create risk for you. A 50% deposit upfront is already on the higher side, and without knowing what that actually covers, you don’t have much protection if something goes wrong. Here’s why asking for a breakdown matters: * You need to know what the 50% deposit is paying for (materials? labour? design?). * “25% on delivery of materials” is unclear unless materials are itemised — otherwise you can’t verify value. * The final 25% on completion is standard, but only makes sense if earlier payments are justified. * If there’s no breakdown, it’s harder to challenge delays, defects, or disputes. What you should ask for: * A full itemised quote (materials, labour, fittings, VAT, etc.) * Clear definitions of each payment stage * Confirmation of what happens if there are delays or issues * Whether the deposit is refundable (and under what conditions) Also worth noting: for something like bespoke porch doors, staged payments are normal — but transparency is expected from any reputable contractor. If they push back or refuse to provide a breakdown, that’s a red flag.

50% up front is fair. Suppliers ask for a 50% deposit when ordering the the remaining 50% when collecting. Unless that person has a credit account that's another of money up front from a tradesman.
