Exposed garden concrete base is very rough and brittle on surface

Imran Miah 16/04/2026 - 8.19 AM

Hi guys, Grateful for some advice on how I would go about resolving this issue. A few years ago I poured (via pump through house) concrete on a block of land about 5m x 4m at the end of my garden. We tampered it down as we went but didn't smooth off with brush or the wide trowels due to finishing so late. It then snowed that night and for a couple of days which I know is terrible for freshly laid concrete. Tried covering it with tarp but was too large and conditions weren't suitable to allow it to breathe. My Gardner/landscaper came and checked the strength by drilling a few screws at various points and said the strength was fine. However, the surface level isn't smooth and has loose dusty concrete and screed. I'm not planning to build an outhouse or anything on it anytime soon. Just got appearance purposes and the kid being able to play, would epoxy resin or a layer of self levelling concrete be the best option? If so, what do I use as and edge to stop run off etc. Thanks in advance.

Hi Imran. Yes I would suggest a resin bond mix at 18 - 20mm. 1st prime the dry area you want to resin and then fix 20mm tile beads around the outside. This will support the resin from dropping off the sides. Hope this helps. Michael GBM Ltd

You can use a a external latter or you could smooth with a concrete sander
