Tiles where there’s a blanking plate
Lydia 30/03/2026 - 11.07 AM
We’re getting our kitchen re-tiled later this week and we’re curious whether we can tile over where there’s currently a blanking plate, rather than going round it. It was like that when we moved in so never used the connection there and don’t expect it’ll be used in the future, as it’s right next to the sink. When we use a stud/wire finder, it does recognise it on there so assume it must still be live in some capacity? What electrical work would be involved if we wanted the tiles to go over the space rather than around the blanking plate? Thanks!

You can’t just tile over a blanking plate if there are still live cables behind it. Under BS 7671, electrical connections must stay accessible unless they’re made safe using approved maintenance-free joints.
Your options:
•Get an electrician to disconnect/remove the cables (best if unused)
•Convert it to a maintenance-free junction so it can be safely buried
•Or leave the blanking plate and tile around it
Tiling over it as it is now would be non-compliant and unsafe.
All work should be carried out by a qualified electrician so meet current standards
