Black mould left over from leak behind kitchen units

Anonymous user 09/03/2026 - 7.55 AM

We had a washing machine waste pipe leak which seems to have been gushing on the wall behind the kitchen counters. The leak is fixed but it left mould on the plasterboard. I’ve attempted to clean it up with Zinsser products but it is still partly visible - the paper on the plasterboard was very flaky and black before. The leak is fixed already so we just need the aftermath sorted out. The mould is in an awkward place (behind the washing machine/kitchen counters). What job/type of company should I be contacting for this? I'm not sure of mould control type companies are relevant as the source of the mould should be addressed already (leak fixed)

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, i would've let it air out / dry out. As its most likely been wet for a while then clean the area with bleach water and then paint it once it had dried out.

You want a joiner/kitchen fitter/handy man for this. You’d start by un hooking washing machine and putting to the side. You’d want to remove the units in the way of the mould patch. Cut out damaged plaster board and skirting that’s damaged (neatly) replaced the plaster board and skirting if it needs it. Re fit everything! A long day or two workers for the day I think would be sufficient Very worst case is there’s serious water damage to the walls and sub floor. Depends how long it was leaking for

As the leak has been fixed, thoroughly clean the area with mould remover and when dry paint with mould resistant paint.

Hi, If the leak has been properly fixed and the area has fully dried out, then this is no longer a “mould specialist” job, it’s more of a repair and remedial building works issue. When plasterboard paper has gone black and flaky, it usually means the board has absorbed contaminated moisture. In most cases, cleaning alone won’t permanently solve it because mould can remain within the board itself. The correct long-term solution is typically: • Remove affected plasterboard sections • Check timber battens/studs behind for damage • Allow the area to fully dry • Replace with new board • Treat surrounding area with mould-inhibiting primer • Make good and redecorate Because it’s behind units and a washing machine, this would usually require partial removal of the base cabinets to access it properly. You’re looking for a general builder or kitchen installer with experience in remedial works, rather than a mould fogging company. Kind regards, Tom T&M Construction Ltd

Hello 👋 If you have mold on plasterboard, you cannot simply clean or paint over it. Plasterboard is porous, meaning mold spores live inside the material, not just on the surface. You must first identify and fix the source of the moisture. If the board is soft or heavily infested, the only professional solution is to cut out the affected section, treat the cavity, and install new moisture-resistant (green) board. Using "mold-resistant" paint is only a preventative measure for the future, not a cure for existing rot.

Fix the leak first after live the wall to dry, after the its drying you can clean the plasterboard with mold spray, if the plasterboard it's in good condition you can paint this area but if the plasterboard is damaged must be replace it plastering and paint
