3 pole fan isolator switch
Anonymous user 27/02/2026 - 10.25 AM
I'm about to fit an inline bathroom fan and wondered whether it is acceptable to fit the 3 pole isolator on the ceiling just above the door, outside the bathroom. The one gang dry lining box will protrude into the loft area. Thanks

Usually when installing fans we put the isolator above the door on the outside of the bathroom, right?
When installing a duct fan, the actual fan sits in the loft so you have to get up into the loft to actually service the fan...in this instance is it aceptable to put the fan isolator in the loft next to the board the duct fan is mounted on?

Yes 👍 — in the UK it is acceptable to install a 3-pole fan isolator outside the bathroom, above the door on the ceiling, provided it complies with the regs.

I don’t think there are and regs about not doing that. It might be a little unsightly.
I should impress on you that all electrical work in a special location eg bathroom is notifiable under part P Building regs. So in short You must use a electrician who’s a member of a competency body

Emsblackpoolltd gave you the correct answer. The fan isolator is for servicing and cleaning so can be placed where the fan is. Part P and notifiable work in a bathroom (England) doesn’t apply here unless this is a new circuit. Part P does not apply in a bathroom unless the work is in the zones or it is a new circuit. This is an inline fan so won’t actually be in the bathroom anyway It will be in some sort of void space such as the loft.
