Stud wall

Anonymous user 10/03/2026 - 3.42 PM

Hello I am looking to have an existing single door opening closed up, I believe it can be completed using studwork and boarding, can someone give a vague idea of the materials that would be required to have this job completed.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Depending on size of door frame would determine what size bits of wood would be needed, plaster boards, plaster, scrim and paint.

A stud wall will normally be built with 2x3 or 2x4 batons, so check what size the stud work is on your wall first, make sure the bottom plate is treated wood if fixing into a concrete floor though. Then 12.5mm plasterboard enough for both sides. You will need 5x100mm wood screws for fixing the studs and 25mm drywall screws for the plasterboard. A roll of scrim tape and maybe insulation slabs if wanted/needed then you are good to go.

Yes you can use timber to make a stud frame. You'll roughly need 8 lengths of timber, 1 bag Multifinish. 3x 6x3 plasterboard. To complete the job. Should take 1 day.

Hi For single door 3 2.4 lengths of c track metal stud. Cut to height use off cuts on floor & head then fix vertical lengths to either side & central. That would create the stud then 3 6×3 12.5mm plasterboard cut to size of opening fix to metal frame with screws, peel any paper away from edge scrim tape joint & skim. Materials mentioned should be around £80 selco

All answers already given are roughly correct. Apart from recommendation of rockwool sound slab insulation between the studs/uprights Also would always use fire rated plasterboard as good building practice Cheers

Hi remove the door, architraves & frame first. Measure the timbers on the stud wall now they are exposed. Usually most doors are 2’6’ but some 2’9’. Buy 4 2.4m lengths of timer. measure the opening & make the frame on the floor, this is easier than trying to build in situ. Fix to the existing stud. Check the size of plasterboard you need, 12.5mm or 9.5mm. Board , scrim joints to stop cracking & scim.

Timber Studs: The wooden "skeleton" used to build the frame inside the doorway. Insulation: Rockwool or glass wool stuffed inside the frame so the wall doesn't sound hollow or let noise through. Plasterboard: The grey or white boards screwed to the timber to create the new wall surface. Plaster & Tape: "Scrim" tape to cover the joins and a plaster "skim" coat to make the new section smooth and flush with your existing wall.
