Gas Works

Installation of new gas range cooker nigtlhtmare

Liam Sanderson 27/02/2026 - 7.56 AM

Hi there I have a range cooker in my kitchen which I inherited from the previous owner. It was installed by a Corgi registered gas fitter. (I have the documentation, company now dissolved). Fast forward ten years, one of the hobs has stopped working. We have insurance, they sent an engineer to take a look, he said the part to replace the hob was not available. The insurance company are now offering a replacement cooker (this seems crazy as the cooker is fine except for this one hob). Anyway, the insurance company offer a few like for like replacements. We've chosen one and had to send a few details regarding the dimensions around the cooker. They've now got back to us and said that whilst we can have the new cooker, they won't disconnect the old one and reconnect the new one. The reason is the height from the hob to the extractor fan above. They say this needs to be 650mm minimum, I've got it as 630mm? Would I be correct in thinking that nobody will be able to install this cooker for me unless I increase the height of the built in extractor fan? And what are the thoughts on the engineer who installed this in the first place? Is there wiggle room around this 650mm? Extenuating circumstances that I'm not aware of? Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Hi, firstly try and clean existing hob. The parts that come away just give a soak in soapy water. Then get a sewing needle and clean out gas feed ( stick needle in it a few times) it's a little hex shape brass connection underneath what you have just removed. Put it back together and switch on. Shouldnt take 5 mins. Worth a try as I've had loads of hobs that just needed clean. On the other point all appliances should be installed to manufacturers instructions. Existing oven might be 630mm. Maybe there were no specific instructions on height. Maybe fitter wasn't fussed over 20mm . There are adjustable ovens on market on legs which can be lowered. Good luck.

When you say one job stopped working can you be more specific? Eg is there ignition(spark) to the hob? Or no ignition, just gas? If just gas, does the job work if using matches or electronic lighter? Rectification will depend on your response. No gas is usually a blockage of some sort. No ignition involves a little more work, but you can work around this with a lighter if sone sort. Depending on the make and model, it is usually possible to find parts for most cookers/hobs as there are companies that specialise in parts for older machines out there. I would recommend a cooker repair specialist if you wish to keep the cooker.
