Building an extension over an old coal chute
Ben Orchard 26/02/2026 - 10.06 AM
We are currently looking at buying a property with a basement that has an old coal chute leading down into the basement. The new extension will ideally be built over the top of the said coal chute. Is this possible? What would be the process? And if some form of ventilation needed to be added to and from the basement, how do you go about it?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. Absolutely you can build over old coal chute as get an engineer involved as he can calculate a steel to take the extra load.
Regarding ventilation, absolutely in the cellar, a couple of air brick should suffice.

Yes, building over an existing coal chute is possible, but it must be assessed properly from a structural, waterproofing, ventilation and Building Regulations perspective.
We can help you with that.
Wish you a great day.
