Roof window - wooden frame rotting

Anonymous user 11/02/2026 - 7.58 AM

Hi there I have a large velux window which has some rot on the frame (only visible when the window is open as it is on the outer frame, not the one around the pane of glass). I used wet rot wood hardener and it has stopped it from getting any worse, but I want to know if I can have this repaired, or if I would need to replace the entire unit. I would say it has impacted approx 8 inches of the frame.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Have just read your post and can say repairing frame will be cheaper than replacement and a suitable outcome can be achieved. Make sure all rotten wood is removed and treated with 5 star wood treatment to stop further growth of rot. Then apply wood hardener and two pack wood filler. Sand to finish and seal with Primer or varnish what ever is needed. The one thing you need to do is find out why it is getting wet. What's causing the rot. You will most like need to look at the flashing surround to find the leak. Once you have stopped the leak you have stopped the problem. Hope this helps.

Yes — it can be repaired. If the rot is limited to about 8 inches on the outer frame and hasn’t affected the structural part of the window, a timber splice repair can be done. The damaged section is cut out, treated, and a new piece of wood is fitted in.
