Acodrain and DPC

Lewis 09/02/2026 - 4.33 PM

Can a Acodrain be installed directly against brickwork or does it need something like shingles between it? And can it be 50mm under DPC without causing rising damp in future

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

An ACO drain can be installed directly against brickwork, but it must not bridge the DPC. Installing it only 50 mm below DPC is not recommended due to the risk of damp bridging. Best practice is to keep external drainage at least 150 mm below DPC, with correct falls away from the building.

Hi it can be installed against brick work but keep it above DPC put a layer of stone down to allow the water to soak away then the mortar to attach the drains It will definately cause damp if you lay it below the DPC Hope that helps

You drainage should always be below your dpc, to prevent any rising damp i would suggest leave a shingle gap in-between the acodrain and the house.

Yes, it can — but only if it’s detailed properly. What matters isn’t the plastic channel touching the brick, it’s:water management, preventing splashback, allowing the wall to breathe Best practice options ACO channel 10–20mm gap to wall Filled with gravel/shingle (pea gravel or 10–20mm) stops constant wetting of the brick reduces algae staining allows evaporation gives you tolerance for slight movement
