Windows & Door fitting

Double Glazed Windows advice Please

Anonymous user 10/02/2026 - 7.59 AM

Sorry for long message, looking for advice ☺️ We had new upvc windows fitted 32 years ago. A lot are blown and the UPVC has faded on the sunny side of house, so decided at our age to replace windows now and have the benefit of these new windows. We selected a company, which was mid range in quotes, paid deposit on the 2nd October 2025 and they came Monday 26th January 2026 to fit them. Turned up Monday at 9.20, showed me strips they were going to put inside, I explained that as far as I know we were not going to have plastic strips, as we mentioned when ordering that if any damage to plaster, who would fix it and told that they do. They took out first two windows, the new windows don’t fit, apparently my sills are to high, so not there fault, I was asked what I wanted to do, my reply was want normally happens, I can’t be the only house this has happened to 🤷‍♀️ lad uses a multi tool to cut top of window 🤦‍♀️ I’m now getting really worried. The one window is so low on the sill they can’t get the glass in. Fast forward they put our windows back in, which were damaged getting out and left, now waiting for his boss to be in contact, which hasn’t happened yet. Question 1, is it normal to pay deposit three and half months before fitting? Question 2, do most companies put plastic edging on inside of windows to fill gaps? Question 3, would it be normal for the gaps around window frames to be even or some to be level with fixing glass trim? Question 4, I was told it was fine to cut frame to fit? Question 5, normal for fitter to question the colour we have chosen? I could go on, I just can’t believe what happened yesterday, the company has been going for years and also manufacture the windows. I do like the look of the windows, just seems so odd what has happened. There was no problems fitting the old windows 32 years ago, no plastic trim was needed. Gosh I hope this all makes sense, and sorry for the long post 😔

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I fit windows for a living and have for a long time. The trims around the window are industry standard now and is very normal it makes a very nice neat finish, trims were not used 30 years ago as they were available so that’s ok however the window not fitting properly is poor surveying and not normal and cutting the top of the window off is definitely not acceptable and they need to get new windows made that do fit correctly.

Hi As to question 1, it is very normal to use trims on new windows However if you have been told they would plaster it that should have been done. Do you have photos? I’m a fully qualified double glazing fitter and would be happy to rectify these issues for you at a small cost as windows and door aren’t cheap and you shouldn’t have problems considering the age of them

Hello ...I've only read so far snd I can tell you no professional will cut window frames with a multi tool . What's happened here is the person sent to measure all the windows hasn't measured correctly....he hasn't accounted for the sills correctly so your new windows won't fit . I'll continue reading......

Trims are normal but cutting them with a multi tool means they haven't measured properly especially fitting after 3 months. If measured correctly in the first place there wouldn't have to be such drastic consequences. Taking out the old fair enough but not on new ones .

When we measure the windows it is very normal to measure both external openings (brickwork to brickwork) and internal (Reveal to Reveal). If this measurement is off by a fair margin that indicates Wide Reveals or in your case Internal cills. The surveyor should have allowed for this and extension add ons fitting also that reduce the window size but makes it up with the add ons. This gets over any frames being swallowed by the reveals/cills.

Q1, Yes it's a normal process. Q2,PVC Facings are normal also, but if you have asked for them not to be fitted then they should not have been fitted. Repairs to surrounds are for discussion. Q3 and Q4,The glazing beads should be even gap all round or as close to....add ons should be used to fix...frames shouldn't be getting altered by cutting this is a red flag. Q5,No

Trims are normal and is standard as you want a good finish , and the other problem you have it sounds like your windows are a miss measure and the profile is hidden at the bottom so they tried to over come it by de-ribing the top and moving the window upto the lintle/brick above , i would demand surveyor to re measure the window as it is not right!
