What cable is required for a secondary consumer unit within a domestic property

Anonymous user 27/01/2026 - 8.00 AM

Hello. I have a question about a secondary comsumer in a large garage. The garage will have lighting/ washing machine/ dryer/ some sockets and then also the exterior lighting circuit. There could be some future changes that may require the addition of some more circuits. My question is what cable size would be installed from the main unit in the house to the garage unit? Also what size of circuit breaker would be sufficient in the main unit for the garage feed. Thanks for your help.

Hi, there are only really 2 options to consider from a single phase supply; 10mm or 16mm. There are of course many variables to consider, it’s definitely not a diy job.

I’d go 16mm in case you wanna add more in the future eg an EV charger or something else that powerful
