Is it possible to completely air seal the floorboards in an older terrace house?
James Ridley 23/01/2026 - 7.58 AM
I live in an older terrace house and I'm looking to try and air seal the floorboards because whenever I open my windows it pulls in smoke from next door through the shared floorboards. I had vinyl flooring put down instead of carpeting a few years ago, and I'm not sure if that's affected things. How feasible would it be to make older floorboards airtight?

Hi there.
From what you’re describing it sounds to me like a solution to the problem would be to lift your flooring and install 6mm plywood sheets to the floor and once that is complete applying ‘feather finish’ which is a patch screed over the joints of the ply and that should rectify your problem.
