wall removal - enclosed stairs

Ben 17/08/2026 - 8.12 AM

my semidetached house has an enclosed staircase at the external wall of the house. My question is- Can I remove the wall between the stairs and lounge for un open space? the wall sound empty not brick, but thill wall continues upstairs till the ce lift ceiling so is part of the box bedroom upstairs which sits on the top of the stairs. Some people said is possible other might not because of the bedroom wall upstairs. Can somebody advise me please? no structural engineer will come for an hour fee to look at it, all I called is £500 for a survey and I think is too much just for a question. I will appreciate any professional advice, thanks!8

It may be possible, but don’t assume the wall is non-load-bearing because it sounds hollow. As there’s a bedroom above, it could still have a structural function. The wall may also provide fire protection to the staircase. I’d get an experienced builder to inspect it first. If there’s any doubt, a structural engineer is worth the cost before removing anything.
