Insulation

External wall insulation

Anonymous user 23/06/2026 - 11.52 AM

it is semi-detached house built in 1920s; solid wall construction. approx 720 sq ft (according to estate agents). There is a lot of space all around the front, back and side of the house. The walls are quite cold, and I think are damp. Insulation is required. what insulation is more suitable/appropriate (rockwool? celatex? any other?) is one better than another? Is there an optimum time of year for it to be installed? (summer?) or does it not matter? presumably it has be dry weather?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

For a 1920s solid wall house, external wall insulation is usually a good option, but any damp should be checked first. Mineral wool/rockwool is often suitable for older solid wall properties because it is breathable and non-combustible. EPS can also be used depending on the wall condition and system specification. Ideally, the work should be done in dry, mild weather, avoiding heavy rain, frost or very cold temperatures. A site visit would be best to check the walls, access and advise the correct system.
