Best type of non key lock for wooden garden gate?
Elliot Trussell 03/03/2026 - 7.58 AM
Hi - I have a mechanical keypad lock on my wooden garden gate. However as the wooden gate swells and shrinks in weather, the lock mechanism is very inconsistent and code entry often does not work. What type of non-key lock is a better solution for outdoor wooden gates? (I don’t want a key based lock as I keep a spare house key in a lock box in the garden for when I get locked out)
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

A Yale connect would work well, it's all digital and can be unlocked via Keypad (touch), fobs , phone and remotely , no keys required, but you would need a waterproof box if the battery cover is exposed to weather

Hi you could have the Yale smart lock with night latch which has a digital code and fob access.

For a wooden garden gate where you don’t want a key, the most practical options are a good quality gate latch or a mechanical keypad lock designed for timber.
