Conservatories

Conservatory or extension

Anonymous user 19/01/2026 - 8.10 AM

Hello, were in north east England and weighing up the costs, pros and cons of either a conservatory with a solid roof or an extension at 2.5m x 4m. Would we be looking at much of a cost difference between the 2? We like the idea of a conservatory as have a large garden and we only want to use the space as a dining area and seating area to enjoy the garden but we are aware that an extension might be a better option as a long term option but it all depends on cost really.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I’d say save up a bit more and get a proper extension done. That’s all I got to say 👍

I believe that a conservatory/orangery is a stunning addition to any home. But the long and short of it is that people will always view a conservatory as a Temporary construction. It will always have that “added on” look to it. And in reality it doesn’t have the integrity of a newly constructed extension. Yes the price between the two is like night and day. But it will depend on what your reasons are for this new construction. A 6m x 6m conservatory will cost anywhere from say £20k - £30k for a high spec. On the other hand , a 6m x 6m extension can potentially cost £40/50k - to well over £100k * These prices vary significantly depending on your location *
