Roofing

Do I need a roofer or can a handyman do this job?

Anonymous user 08/01/2026 - 7.59 AM

As far as I can see I have a single slate/roof tile on my roof which is has shifted slightly which will need re-fixing as I have a slight leak. As well as this the mortar fillet/cement fillet (hopefully this is correct, had to use ChatGPT to find this out, basically a cement filler used between the side of the house and the last row of roof slates to stop water getting in) has come away and needs repairing as we have a leak on the side of the house. Do I need a roofer for these jobs or can a handyman do this work?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Always get a credible roofer to do all roofing repairs, things always look easier from the ground (trust me most times you come up against issues a non roofer wouldn’t do properly)

Yes you would need a roofer slate roofs are dangerous to be climbing onto without the correct know how and experience. And the cement fillet is the old way of doing it all parapet wall abutments should be flashed with lead toothed into the brick work either with a straight chase or stepped. Hope this helps. 👍🏻

You need a roofer that can carry out the work proficiently and provide you with a credible guarantee for the repair.

Re-fixing a slate or tile sounds small, but it’s proper roofing work. I would lift surrounding slates correctly without cracking them Re-fix using the right method (nail, hook, or slate clip depending on roof type) Check for hidden damage to the underfelt or battens A handyman might be willing to do this, but many don’t have the experience or insurance for working on pitched roofs, and poor fixing can easily make leaks worse. Mortar fillet at the roof edge (verge / abutment) What you’re describing is commonly called a mortar fillet (sometimes at a verge or where the roof meets a wall). This is a common leak point and is often done badly. I would Remove loose or failed mortar properly Decide whether it should be re-pointed or replaced with a better solution (e.g. lead flashing or a dry verge system) Use the correct mix and detailing so it doesn’t crack and fail again A handyman may simply patch over it with cement, which often cracks and leaks again within a year or two. Leaks = specialist job The key detail is that you already have leaks. Once water ingress is involved, this moves beyond “handyman territory”. Diagnosing the true source of a leak is something roofers do all the time; guessing wrong wastes money.

You will need a crawler to even get on the roof without falling throught you could put a new slate in with a hall hook or a strip of lead but its dangerous work repointing the gable end isnt easy either you will have to do it either off a ladder or a crawler and lean over it depends how handy you actually are but it is dangerous work if your not fully aware of the danger involved its best to leave it to someone that is
