Which type of tradesperson do I need
Vickie 06/01/2026 - 10.20 AM
To repair a porch which is slumping to the front right hand corner? We had a heavy wisteria growing over it. It’s an open porch, with a plasterboard & tiled roof, attached to the front of the house. With two wooden posts at the front. Unsure who we need to contact to repair it.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Most builders should be able to help with this. If not you may have to contact a ground worker as it will be the foundations if the corner is sinking.

Any good general builder should be able to see if the post has sunk, or the wisterias branches have caused the roof to drop, and easily fix it.

From your description, this isn’t just a cosmetic issue — it sounds like a structural movement problem, likely caused by the weight of the roof and the wisteria affecting the front posts or their foundations.
Who you should contact
You should be looking for an experienced general builder who regularly does:
• Porches
• Structural repairs
• Timber posts / small roof structures
A competent builder is usually the right first point of contact, not a roofer or plasterer alone.
⸻
Why a builder (not just one trade)
The repair may involve:
• Assessing whether the wooden posts have rotted or sunk
• Checking the foundations or base pads under the posts
• Possibly replacing or re-supporting the posts
• Realigning and making good the roof structure
• Replacing damaged plasterboard or tiles if needed
That’s multiple trades in one job, which a general builder can coordinate and carry out.
⸻
When you might also need an engineer
If the porch is:
• Pulling away from the house
• Continuing to drop or twist
• Carrying more load than originally designed
Then the builder may recommend a structural engineer to confirm the fix — but this is usually only if movement is significant.
⸻
Important note about the wisteria
Wisteria is extremely heavy and aggressive. Before repairs:
• It should be cut back or removed
• Otherwise the problem is very likely to return

This issue should be assessed by a competent builder or structural specialist rather than a single trade.
Slumping at one corner often indicates movement at the base, such as inadequate foundations, ground movement or long-term loading from the previous wisteria.
Before any cosmetic repairs are considered, the structure, posts and support below should be properly assessed to identify the cause of the movement.
Once the underlying issue is understood, the appropriate remedial work can be determined, which may involve structural repairs rather than surface fixes.
