Living room artex plaster over disaster.
Anonymous user 10/12/2025 - 8.01 AM
Recently had our living room ceiling done and it was gritted over the artex then plastered over. After it dries the stae of the finish was a joke! Trowel lines all over in many directions now the ceiling has now cracked! The plasterer has offered to re do it. But the room if finished and painted (final coat) so there is not a chance he is coming back to that room! What shall I do?? Any way I can tidy it up.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Proper time served plasterers i hope will agree not every artex ceiling can just be overboarded, for instance if there is existing coving etc, also a word of warning to all customers, the cheapest quote is not always the best quote,

Hi, without seeing the ceiling its hard to say! If your not happy with the finish then I would probably get it redone by someone else or get the plasterer to do it again. It all depends on how you feel about it.

Sorry that you had a bad result.
Did the plaster recommend that he over boarded the ceiling which is the best way but not the cheapest.
I have plastered over loads of artex ceilings with out any issues.
You may of had an inexperienced plasterer or plaster went off too quick for him or her.
Things go wrong occasionally, but the plasterer has offered to redo it.
But you have probably lost confidence in them now.
I’d probably ask them to over board it and replaster at no extra cost to you.

Bespoke timber developments
No reviews yet
He should of used bonding plaster over the artex before using skim
No need to use grit

Unfortunately with a poor finish you have very limited options - you can sand plaster and refill the crack that’s appeared (Not the correct way of rectifying) but obviously you need to address the reason as to why it has cracked - it may not be because of the grit/prep - there is a possibility the ceiling is weak/old and may require overboarding.
Without seeing this in person we are a little restricted in giving you an accurate response.
Thanks

Should have hired SG plastering services would have had no issues 😀, artex is a pain to cover but as long as it’s coated properly with a magic mix of bonding and plaster then recoated with multi finish there shouldn’t be a problem, also be aware of anyone offering to scrape artex first as it often contains asbestos which is obviously hazardous

When plastering over artex. Especially if its thick. You should first coat then leave to set more than usual. Then apply a second coat the job will be good as plastering over plaster board then works every. Time and ibe been plastering for 16 years now.
