Vertical sliding window
Anonymous user 28/11/2025 - 11.29 AM
Have two vertical sliding windows which open and lock ok but once opened they slide back down to closed position and need to be propped open. Having difficulty finding a tradesperson to fix them…. all repairs seem to veer towards tilt and turn windows.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It sounds like the balances (also known as sash springs or spiral balances) in your vertical sliding windows have failed or lost tension. These mechanisms are what hold the sashes in place when you open the window. When they wear out, the window will slide back down on its own instead of staying open.
A repair is usually straightforward it involves replacing or re-tensioning the balances. This can be done without replacing the whole window. Look for a tradesperson who specialises in sash window repairs or uPVC/vertical sliding window maintenance, rather than general window fitting or tilt-and-turn specialists.
