Fitting a staircsse handrail to gyptoc and acoustud

I want to fit a new staircase handrail as the existing one is a pigsear and it's difficult to grip. On removing the pigsear, I can see that it was screwed through 12mm plasterboard, which itself was glued onto metal acoustuds behind. I am now worried that the plasterboard and metal acoustud alone will not be sufficient to fix to hand take the strain of the new handrail brackets to.

If you’re willing to open up a narrow strip of plasterboard: 1. Cut out a horizontal strip of plasterboard along the handrail line. 2. Insert and screw timber noggins (e.g., 38×63 mm or 2×3) between the metal studs. 3. Re-board and skim the strip. 4. Screw the handrail brackets into the new solid wood behind. This would be a great long term solution and would be more than strong enough, it would only require plastering in areas
