Fixed price for labour for 2 days but only worked 4 1/2 hours.
Anonymous user 14/11/2025 - 8.58 AM
I was charged to have laminate flooring put down and skirting boards fitted in one room. I was quoted a price for 2 days work. This quote was only for labour. I had to provide all materials to complete the job. However the job only took 4 1/2 hours in total. They didn’t turn up on the first day and only worked from lunchtime on the second day. Can I query why I am still expected to pay the same in labour costs?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi!
It depends on how the quote was given — was it a price per job or per hour?
If it was priced per job, it doesn’t really matter whether the work took 1 hour or 5 days — the amount stays the same.
Also, if he mentioned 2 days, that’s usually just an estimate based on his schedule, not a guarantee of 8 hours of work each day.

Yes — you can question it. Labour quotes usually cover time, skill, and job value, but you can reasonably ask for a price adjustment . But remember you pay for experience not time ! As if this would take 5 days will you pay them extra then ?

Yes, you absolutely have the right to question that.
If the tradesperson quoted you for two days of labour but the work actually took less than five hours, it’s perfectly reasonable to ask for an explanation or adjustment of the cost based on the actual time worked.
A “two-day quote” is usually based on an estimate of how long the job should take, but if the work was completed much quicker, the tradesperson should be able to justify why the full charge still applies.

Did you have anything in writing.
What you will pay fur and what you won't.
Always good to make a written contract before.
Take a photo and send to both parties on WhatsApp.
Then you have something to go by.

I noticed you put THEY, if I am quoting on a job like flooring I allow for any problems if I am not supplying the materials, In quoting on timings of the job, 2 Days for 2 person on site is one day to complete works, 1 person 2 days, I will say if we had completed the job in good time and have NOT already given a discount to get the job, i would have knocked 2 hours off the price.

If it was a fixed price then you can question it as that’s the price. But same time if he was charging you by the day yes certainly question it.
