Gas Safe - registered under a business, not actually an employee

Good afternoon, My eldest son is currently registered and wholly qualified as a Gas Safe engineer. He works for a large firm undertaking boiler servicing, installation and maintenance. He is looking to start on his own but first wants to “test the water”. Is he legally able to be registered on the gas safe registration of his friends business, despite not being an actual employee of said business? So this would be separate from his actual full time employment. I have had a good look on Gas Safe and there is nothing to state he would have to be an actual employee of his friends business, just he would have to be registered. I understand this is not correct with HMRC etc but can anyone inform me the case with the Gas Safe register? Thank you, Harold.

Hi A business can’t register someone if they’re not employed by that business. I would recommend he sets up on his own as self employed or limited company along side his employment and then registers himself with gas safe which isn’t expensive - I think £300 - £400. He would be allowed to earn up to £1000 without having to submit a self assessment tax return on top of his normal wage. It also keeps things clear. Thanks

Yes, he can be put on his mates Gas safe registraion and can help him on jobs. Gas safe will send him his own gas card with a card number and the registration number will be his mates. If he wants to test the waters thats best way to do it before spending about 500£ I have my own gas safe and i work for a company and am on thier gas safe too
