Can sand bags be left on roof for long periods of time?

Anonymous user 04/11/2025 - 7.58 AM

Hi guys I have an issue where my boiler flue drips onto my kitchen extension roof. I’ve been told this drip is slightly acidic and over time will damage the roof. It drips onto the lead flashing and I’m concerned about long term damage as this roof is new (installed 6 months ago) I’ve tried to get the flue sorted but long story short - I’ve spent a load of money and it’s still dripping My idea is to temporarily put a tarpaulin over this small section of the roof to catch the water drops for the winter while I work out a permanent solution. However I need to weigh the tarpaulin down. Would using sand bags, or maybe bags of soil to hold the tarp down cause any damage to the roof with the constant weight in one location? E.g. weight on the roof tiles, timbers etc

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
