can i knock cupboard through to open up kitchen

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.43 PM

I have two old style cold cupboards in my kitchen that id like to knock down but they are under my stairs/landing and am unsure if they are loadbearing, the stairs are on the external wall and downstairs is seperated by a wall between kitchen/livingroom

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In most situations they are not load bearing. If the thickness of the walls are under 130mm in thickness, I would not expect the walls to be load bearing. Best way to establish this for certain is to remove floor boards from the first floor and have a closer look to establish if any of the floor joists are bearing onto the walls in question. Also bear in mind that if the walls are removed that the ceiling heights under the stairs will be lower than the kitchen. Hope that helps.
