Sewage smell coming from sink

Lorianne Harvey 24/10/2025 - 11.15 AM

I’ve had a sewage smell coming from my downstairs toilet sink and it has been this way since it was installed. This was a new toilet that was put in the property, there wasn’t a downstairs toilet there before. The builder thinks it’s an issue with the style of trap, it’s a Morden one that’s shaped like the letter “T” sideways. Can any plumbers advise whether they have had any issues with this same style of trap??

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It could be the trap or could be blocked drains outside or maybe need air admittance valve

Is this a hand wash basin or an actual sink? If it’s a basin, check to see if the smell goes away when you run the taps for a short while and ensure the trap is full of water. If there is still a smell beyond doing this, I’d look at where the pipe terminates. If it has its own drain, it may be worth checking that it’s sealed correctly at that point, and the odour isn’t entering the room further along from the trap itself. Hope this helps.

Anti siphon not working and when flushing toilet it draws the water out the trap
