Insulation

Insulating a Single brick outbuilding

Anonymous user 17/11/2025 - 8.08 AM

Hello all, I want to turn our single brick outbuilding into an office and am not too sure how to go about doing this. After watching a few videos it seems the following is correct: Build a frame from wooden battons Install something like celotex insulation boards or the rolls of knauff wool insulation - not too sure which is better Install a vapour barrier over top Then cover that will a foil backed plaster board. Does this seem right? Im worried about mould growing in a few years and not sure whether what ive detailed above will be enough. Do I have to use any specific brand for the materials or will any be okay? Please help!

Hello,You can use the option mentioned above or you can do the following: Insulated plasterboard. It can be applied directly on wall using mechanical fixing. This type of insulated plasterboard works really good against mould and it will insulate the walls too. It will take less space comparing with framing plus PIR insulation

Ideally you’ll need a 50mm air gap from the brick wall to the back of the insulation. 1.Cold wall: Leave an air gap, build a frame (metal or timber studs), insulate in between, aluminium tape to cover all the joints (including the frame), a PIR insulation on top of the frame 25mm, Aluminium tape on all the joints, plasterboard, skim, paint. 2. Warm wall: PIR insulation on the wall pinned, build a frame, plasterboard, skim, paint. The frame will act as the air gap. The thickness of the insulation will depend on how much space you’re willing to loose Good Luck
