Advice on flooring for a living room approx 30m2

Erin Des Landes 20/10/2025 - 8.12 AM

I am having a really confusing time with getting to the conclusion on what the most cost effective material to have my living room floor replaced with in a herringbone style natural wood colour variation (NOT GREY). I originally wanted to have the existing carpet replaced with the Lino/Vinyl that comes off a roll.. however with the room being approx 6mx5m which also includes a bay window it became apparent that this option may become on a par with the other options I had in mind which are LVT (Vinyl or LVT potentially then having an epoxy resin on the top) OR (the dream) sourcing/buying/salvaging/restoring some second hand old wooden original parquet flooring which I would happily embrace doing some of the restoration work/process myself. Can someone please advise on their professional opinion on what I should be considering and approximate costs. I have 5 cats and I just don’t want any of my downstairs floors to be carpeted to meet and accommodate our needs whilst making it meeting the investment included for longevity so once fitted and Intergrated it will be easily sustainable in every aspect (hopefully my explanation makes some sort of sense to be deciphered)! Thanks in advance, Erin.

Hi Erin. If you definitely want a herringbone finish then LVT planks are probably the best option. A good quality tile should have a guarantee for possibly 20 years if laid by a floorlayer. Very easy to maintain. Herringbone in real wood is fantastic but a little harder to maintain. Big downside is expense of materials and labour. If you purchased reclaimed blocks they would also need sanding and sealing another expense. Genuine Linoleum is another option but you won't get the herringbone. Hope that helps. Paul Bromby. Hi Erin it is possible to have your floor done with vinyl flooring in herringbone but you would have to have a join down one side of your room that if done by the correct person you would not see this join and if you have cats etc you would be best to have the vinyl fully stuck down so then don’t claw it up . Or you can have an alternative and go for the lvt flooring but the price range in between both products are a big difference and with lvt you would need to have your rooms screeded. Hope this helps you
