Deposit for work

Anonymous user 15/03/2026 - 7.25 PM

If the deposit is paid, When do we pay in total for any work done? Is the total paid when the work is finished?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes, pay balance on completion. If it's a small (1-2 day job) with no materials to purchase, I would not expect a deposit to be necessary though...

If there’s no material cost or outlay on myself then i don’t ask for a deposit. I Always ask my customers to pay upon completion so that the customer is at ease and it also builds trust.

This should be explained to you on your quotation or face-to-face. Some projects will require an upfront deposit, then balance to paid be paid on completion. Some larger projects can often incur a stage payment. This is part of the final balance due, usually required to keep materials flowing or to pay wages or something like that.

Deposits mainly are for jobs with a lot of materials to buy or if it is a long running job maybe set over a couple of weeks maybe a 25% deposit on a job over £5000 and if the job is likely to run over a few weeks 25% on start 25% after week one and 50% upon completion any jobs under £1000 and no materials do not need a deposit

All depends on size of the job etc there's too many variables on an extension for example I'll ask 25% upfront 25% at dpc 25% at wall plate final 25% on completion but other companies work differently you should have a contract with terms just refer back to that it should say when a payment is next expected.

Everything is depend from complexity of job. Usually upfront deposit is for cover material cost to carry job. Remaining balance is depends a time necessary to done project. If is only few days the rest balance should be paid once is job done. But if is large project for few weeks or even months they could be paid after each part of project is done for example fortnightly. Of course after agreement between you and customer. Never know what unexpected circumstances could happend.

20% deposit to book the work in and towards materials purchased. Then staged payments throughout the project to provide safety for the client and contractor providing the work is satisfactory. Saying that if a job is small with minimal outlay payment on completion is normal without deposit.

If it’s a small job no deposit is requested, for jobs requiring more than £100 worth of materials to start job i take the cost of the materials then the labour charge is payable when completed unless it’s a real big job then i arrange staged payments from the quote given .

If the deposit is paid before hand then you should either put a payment schedule in place by both parties signature on it or if the contractor is happy for payment on completion then get everything agreed before any work starts.

My policy has always been, as a Bricklayer who supply all materials, is to secure a deposit before work begins. This pays for the materials and shows the customers willingness to pay for the work that they want undertaken. The Balance, I write in their QUOTATION: is paid on the day of job completion to the customers satisfaction. So anything they are not happy with is put right before they pay the final balance. You can’t get any fairer than that.

Dependant on the size of the job, If its of a larger scale then yes a deposit would be necessary, and possibly stage payments. If its a reasonably job then yes a deposit is helpful and full payment on completion of the work. If its a small job no deposit should be necessary and payment in full on completion.

The balance for any work is ordinarily settled upon its satisfactory completion. A deposit is generally only required where there are upfront costs, such as materials or specialist assistance. For modest undertakings, particularly those of a day or two with no additional expenses, it is entirely reasonable to pay once the task is concluded. It is always prudent to agree the terms in writing beforehand, and for larger projects, arranging payments in clearly defined stages can provide both security and peace of mind for all concerned.

Different company’s have different methods, we ask for a £100 to secure the date then on day one we ask for 40% once materials etc arrive on site and the remaining balance on completion of the job when happy with everything. If there’s no material’s or very little it’s just the £100 to secure the date in diary the payment in completion. Should never pay more than 25% upfront without seeing materials or work been done in my opinion and I would only do that with well known companies

Best to only pay 25% deposit to cover material costs only. Only pay full amount when you are happy work has been completed to an acceptable standard. If not then negotiate why you are reluctant to pay . Best to set out ground rules before any work commences.

Most trades will ask for a deposit, then stage payments or the balance on completion depending on the size of the job. For smaller jobs, it’s usually deposit up front and the rest once the work is finished. For bigger projects, payments are often split into stages (for example, deposit, midway payment, and final payment on completion). Always make sure the payment terms are agreed in writing before the work starts so both sides are clear.

"(NEVER!)" pay a deposit unless it is double glazing/specialized timber/bespoke works EVER. As an aged builder, the only time i require a deposit is when i am ready to start the job. With double glazing every window and door is totally bespoke etc. If i am building you an extension? i require monies as they go out, a jewson wagon turns up at your door with 38 tonne of materials, i need some monies on that day, I dont have to pay upfront to jewsons, i would prefer to, but i can get 30 day credit as an established builder, kitchens, you pay for the kitchen i install it, i have spent no monies until my 1st workers starts, bathrooms, you pay for the bathroom i install it, if i have to buy it? i can get credit for 30 days, i would rather pay upfront. Platering its about 11 pound a bag right now, why would i require a deposit? etc etc. So NO never pay for anything upfront, DO all us builders a favour and pay as we go, couple days graft couple days pay plus materials please. YES specialized trades do need a deposit because they require your commitment only, so we do not loose monies when you cancel the day before the job starts. Lastly if a builder knocks on your door offering work??? There obviously not very good and will over charge you and do a poor job, use sources like this MY builder, you do have some protection, but always in my opinion "word of mouth" One last thing to seriously take into account if its not above £1500 you will never see that money again legally. Think! before you open your wallet. Or simply make an advert on My builder.
