Help - Took off the tiles and half the wall came with them!

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.43 PM

Hi. I took the tiles off a small downstairs bathroom and behind them seems to be just very powdery rendering. Some of the render has come off in big chunks and has exposed the brickwork behind. Its an old house and it doesnt look like plaster behind the tiles. I was thinking of putting on plasterboard but after putting on tiles this will make them stick out over the skirting board and window frames. What is the best way to repair the holes in the rendering? I have bought a sand and cement mix but don't know if I need to do anything to prepare the wall first. Any help gratefully appreciated,

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Hammy_30, Sorry to hear about that. There is two options. To repair the holes in the rendering or (Plaster). Firstly check the surrounding areas of good plaster are still fixed to the brickwork. You need to buy some PVA adhesive (avilable from any good buidlers merchants) and make it up to the instructions for use as a sealer/ primer. Brush off any dust and apply the PVA to bare bricks using a brush, making sure you coat the edges of exisiting plaster. Allow to dry and then your good to patch up the holes with the sand and cement already purchased or get hold of some patching plaster. The second, more radical approach would be to strip all the plaster off, dryline with plasterboard and re-plaster.
