Artificial grass smells

James 26/09/2025 - 8.10 AM

We have had artificial grass laid in the back garden but now it is starting to smell. We have a dog which I think is causing the problem. When installed it was dug out, weed membrane, 50mm type 1, grano dust then the grass. What can I do to stop the smell?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It’s a really common issue when you’ve got dogs — especially in the warmer months. The good news is, the base you’ve got is fine, so you don’t need to worry about the installation. What usually helps is: Giving the area a good rinse through regularly Using a pet-friendly artificial grass cleaner or enzyme-based deodoriser — these break down the bacteria causing the smell rather than just masking it Making sure the surface drains freely, so nothing is sitting on the grass for too long

Hi, unfortunitly with dogs the smell dose not go away and will get worse if they continue to go on it. Best solution would be to stop the dog using it and then use a urine sanitizer and deodoriser on the entire area or where you know they tend to go. Over time the smell will fade. However if you have clay under the subbase then it will be hard to get rid of the smell because of poor drainage. This may lead to having it all redone.

It’s all relevant to the backing of the artificial lawn. Rather than a latex back, it needs to be a “dog friendly” polypropylene backing that doesn’t react to the urine, especially when the heat/sun hits the lawn. I hope this helps. Please ask your installer the type of backing that’s been laid.

Sharp/grit sand holds damp and moisture we find the best base for arti grass is grano dust as this allows any fluids to run straight through rather thank holding it like sand does
