Kitchen renovation required but asbestos tape on floorboards

Amy Lorimer 17/09/2025 - 8.09 AM

Hi all, Recently purchased an older ex council house. Kitchen requires renovation but have confirmed white asbestos tape/glue material that we’re assuming was used to hold down linoleum back in the day. The layout of the kitchen has clearly changed as the tape runs routes not relating to the kitchen as it stands now, exposed under countertops but disappears under newer tiling. We’d really appreciate advice or guidance on the normal way of dealing with this, the whole kitchen needs to come down and be gone essentially, so who do we contact or get in first:- Kitchen fitters, floor fitters or the asbestos removal folk? We’ve read that some floor fitters have certificates in safe removal of asbestos and we’re wondering if this is true, negating the need for professional asbestos removal teams and a signed van outside the house advertising the asbestos house on the street.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You should contact the asbestos company to come out to take a sample and once confirmed they will explain what it the safest way to remove it and what can be removed prior to them arriving
