Outdoor double electric socket extendion but inside shed...rcd plug adapter on the other end?

MARK TROOPS 20/08/2025 - 8.03 AM

Hi everyone hope you can help. we had a bigger she installed with rubber roof etc so its more water tight etc as my mum is into a bit of woodwork etc. we have always used one of those wind up extension leads and plugged it into a socket into the conservatory just while we used it then put it away which is a pain now mum is in the new shed often . on ebay there are outdoor double sockets that have the cables attached so basically they are extension cables ip66 etc we would need about 20 or 25m length one would this be ok to put around the edge of the garden and then into the shed and mounted inside on the wall? and we plan on removing the power plug end and feeding it through a current hole where another cable feeds through into the conservatory and then putting the plug into a masterplug rcd adapter before into the wall socket? would all these be ok and safe for mum to use inside the shed. the cable around the garden we planned on putting that ribbed black cable protector all around as well

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, I completely understand why you’d want a more permanent setup for the shed, especially with your mum using it regularly for woodworking. From a safety point of view though, running a 20–25m outdoor extension lead around the garden and into the shed isn’t recommended as a permanent solution. The main concerns are: Long extension leads can overheat or cause voltage drop when powering tools or heaters. Even if protected, cables left around the garden are at risk of damage from weather, pets, or garden equipment. Plug-in RCD adaptors are good, but they don’t offer the same protection as a proper fixed installation. The safest way forward is to run a dedicated supply in armoured cable (SWA) to the shed, feeding a small consumer unit inside with proper RCD/RCBO protection. That way your mum has safe sockets and lighting, it can be fully tested and certified, and you know it’s compliant and covered by insurance. If it’s just occasional use, a heavy-duty outdoor extension can be used temporarily (always fully uncoiled and unplugged when not in use), but I wouldn’t advise fixing it permanently around the garden. If you’d like, we can give you a quote for a proper supply — it’s usually a straightforward job and means your mum can enjoy her woodworking safely without worrying about electrics.
