Is minor work certificate required for installation of new extractor fan?

Anonymous user 22/08/2025 - 12.46 PM

I am having an extractor fan installed in my kitchen. The electrical cable will be chased into the wall and connected into one of the existing plug points. The electrician said that as they will use the existing electrical points, this is not classed as notifiable works and they won’t issue a Building Regulations certificate. However, should they issue a minor works certificate (MEIWC) or is this not required either? This is for a new fan, not a replacement.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This will need a minor works certificate but will not need to be notified to building control.

Because they are installing a new cable, the contractor will need to give you a minor works certificate

Yes this should still have a minor works certificate. In England it does not require building control notification however in Wales additional sockets or circuit alterations in a kitchen are still notifiable to building control under part p.

Hi there, Because your new kitchen extractor fan is being connected to an existing circuit, it’s not classed as notifiable work under Part P, so you won’t get a Building Regulations certificate. There are two scenarios to consider: - If it is connected via a plug top into an existing socket: this is treated the same as plugging in any other appliance. No electrical certificate is required. -If it is hard-wired (spur, fused connection unit, or directly into the circuit): this is an addition to an existing circuit. In that case, your electrician should issue a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC) to confirm the circuit has been tested and verified safe. The MEIWC is important as it records circuit details, test results, and confirms compliance with BS 7671. Any professional electrician should provide this when hard-wiring a new fan.
