Shower Pump wont turn off

Rhys 18/07/2025 - 3.40 PM

Hi All Having a bathroom refit done currently and come across an issue with our shower pump. Its a 3.0bar salamander universal regen pump. The pump will engage when the shower is on/bath taps or the basin taps however it will not turn off with the shower but will turn off with the bath taps or basin. The plumber has had the pump apart to check for debris etc however all seems clear. The Pump is 4 years old but was all working fine prior to the new sink/shower being fitted but the pipework itself has all remained the same. Any ideas as to what might be causing the issue? Also - The cold water tank is upstairs in the loft and the hot water cylinder is on the bottom floor. The bathroom is on the 2nd floor.

Rather than changing pump u have to change your old gravity system to main pressure

The most likely cause of the issue is the new shower mixer or shower head not fully shutting off the water flow, even when it appears closed. If there is even a small trickle of water, the Salamander universal regen pump, which is flow-activated, may continue running because it senses ongoing usage. Since the bath and basin taps fully shut off mechanically, the pump stops as expected with those fixtures. But if the shower valve or cartridge is slightly faulty, or if the design allows minimal flow after “off” position, the pump will keep running. Other possible contributing factors: – A faulty or semi-blocked shower valve cartridge – Backflow causing false activation – An airlock in the system – An overly sensitive flow switch inside the pump – Pressure imbalance between hot and cold feeds Professional opinion: 🛠️ This is most likely an issue with the newly installed shower fittings, not the pipework or pump itself. A proper flow test should be carried out to see if water is still moving through the pipe when the shower is turned off. Final note: A site inspection is strongly recommended to assess the exact setup, check the valve behaviour, and confirm whether the pump is being falsely triggered by residual flow or pressure issues.
