Boiler system whereby flue can be in void and run flat above ceiling

Anonymous user 14/07/2025 - 2.43 PM

Hi all, I have a 2nd floor flat (4 storeys and built in 2004) in which the boiler is positioned in the centre of the flat. About 10 years ago, the old Powermax died and a new Ideal Combi was installed, however this meant the flue has to run at an angle downwards from the external wall to the boiler itself in the cupboard (approx 3 m) and then needed to be boxed in with an inspection hatch, as it was below the ceiling line. Naturally this looks unsightly. So my question is, is there a boiler system today, whereby the flue can be put back above the normal ceiling, (with an inspection hatch)and then run fully horizontal as it had before (and not need to be boxed in). I've seen other flats in the block with just a hatch in the ceiling and I doubt they are the original Powermax.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can run the flue above the ceiling, as you rightly point out, with inspection hatches but you need to ensure there is sufficient fall on the flue to comply with manufacturer’s instructions.

You have no problem running the flue in the celling void as long as it complies with manufacturers instructions regarding the fall and also hatches made so you can inspect the full length of the flue. The flue also needs to be secured with brackets.
