Can you use carpet that has been folded in half for 9 years?

Meg 26/06/2025 - 12.44 PM

We bought a section of carpet around nine years ago and it has been folded in half for about nine years. Would the carpet still be useable or should we purchase some new ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Meg, Thanks for your question. A carpet that has been folded and stored for about 9 years may still be usable, but there are some important points you should consider before making a decision: 1. Check the condition of the carpet: Unfold the carpet and inspect it carefully. Look for signs such as mold, mildew, discoloration, or permanent fold lines. Long-term storage in a folded state can cause creases that may be difficult to remove. 2. Carpet material: Some natural fibers, like wool, may be more susceptible to damage over time, whereas synthetic carpets generally hold up better. 3. Odor: If the carpet smells musty, damp, or moldy, there’s a chance mold or mildew has developed, which should be taken seriously. 4. Professional cleaning: Before installation, it’s best to have the carpet professionally cleaned to ensure it is fresh and hygienic. If the carpet doesn’t have any serious issues or unpleasant odors, it is probably still usable. However, if you notice significant damage or the fold creases do not come out, it’s better to get a new carpet for a better appearance and durability. Best wishes Reo

Since the carpet was folded for nine years, it may have permanent creases or damage. If it was stored dry and clean, it might still be usable, but you may find it better to replace it for the best result.
